QESOSA Ontario 2004 AGM Dinner (Jan 22, 2005)
It was as though Mother Nature was playing a joke on us.  The day before our 2004 AGM (delayed from its regular November
timeslot due to the GJC), scheduled for Saturday January 22, 2005, the weather forecast called for our first snowstorm of the year,
with accumulation of between 15 to 30 centimetres across southwestern Ontario. We had over 70 members and guests registered
for the AGM, what if inclement weather were to result in an exceptionally low turnout?   Henry Lee, our President, remained cool,
calm and collected. A late evening email from Henry urged all Directors of the Board to have a good night’s sleep, and to meet at
the restaurant the afternoon of the AGM.

As guests began arriving after 6pm, the Board expressed their appreciation of each guest making the effort to negotiate the
challenging weather and road conditions, to arrive safely and join in the evening’s celebrations.  The board understood and was in
total agreement with those guests who had to cancel last minute due to poor driving conditions. Special thanks go to our honoured
guests from QCOBA and BPSOSA, for braving the elements to join our AGM dinner.

Sixty guests were in attendance at the AGM.  Henry Lee, our President, introduced our honoured guests from QC, KC and BPS.
Erica Fong, VP and emcee for the evening, brought the guests up-to-date on 3 of our departed Directors – Marca Suen (returned
to HK), Ann Ma (happily married and living in Rome) and Law Sin-Hung (returned to HK).

The crowd enjoyed a sumptuous dinner, while getting re-acquainted with their former form-mates.  James H.K. Tang, founder and
inaugural president of the QESOSA Ontario Chapter 15 years ago, reminisced on the history of the Chapter, that spanned a
decade and a half. James proudly told the gathering that the Ontario Chapter is the largest overseas QESOSA outside of Hong
Kong.  Our Ontario Chapter currently funds 2 annual scholarships for the QESOSA Schools.  In 2004, our Chapter has also
donated to the QES Principal’s Scholarship. Nancy Tang was the narrator for the video presentation, which included archived
photos from the sixties, and photos that were taken at the various GJC events in Hong Kong during November 2004.  It showed the
new wing for QES, the much-reduced football field, the outdoor basketball courts, our Sai Kong School Camp, the only one of its
kind in Hong Kong.  The crowd was amused when told that the camp, filled with bunk beds, is now equipped with air-conditioning.
Photos also depicted a number of trees that were planted on the camp-site, made possible via donations from various graduating
years.  The tree that was donated by the 1965 grads was the most robust, full of fuschia-coloured blooms.

Photos of the November 28, 2004 QES GJC Gala Dinner at the Convention Centre were shown, including the birthday parade,
where one representative from each of the 50 graduating years paraded up the stage, and around the banquet hall, holding a mini
birthday-cake identifying the year of graduation.  Photos of Dr. Arthur Hinton receiving his Honorary Doctorate of Education
degree from the Chancellor of the Hong Kong Institute of Education were shown.

On display at the AGM dinner were newspaper articles of the QESGJC, the SCMP interview with Dr. Arthur Hinton, Dr. Hinton’s
book “Only A Teacher”, and various other souvenirs and memorabilia that Nancy and James Tang had brought back with them,
available for ordering through the Ontario Chapter, including shipping and handling, and the price list.

Many guests won prizes at the Lucky Draw.  As there were 7 vacancies on the Board, the group was asked to nominate members
to fill those positions.  After the ballots were counted, returning Directors were Henry Lee (61), James S.K. Tang (64), Erica Fong
(81), Nancy Tang (65), and Daniel Chow (70), joined by newcomers Danny Liu (1965) and Barbara Yang (1978).

The AGM dinner gathering concluded around 10:30pm. While the roads hadn’t been plowed or cleared of snow, the snowfall had
ceased in the early evening, making for less of a hazardous drive home for AGM dinner guests.
couple of new faces: Barbara Yang and
Danny Liu. Welcome aboard!
