The QESOSA Ontario Vos Parate Ut Serviatis Scholarship Fund Reported by Nancy Kit Sze (Leung) Tang (65), Scholarship Committee How it all started Pride and excitement overcome all QES students, in Hong Kong and abroad, at the inauguration of the first OSA School at Tin Shui Wai, N.T. Since then, all of us waited with anticipation for the building of the never- ending fleet of advanced education facilities that would benefit Hong Kong’s future generations. The beginning The OSA Ontario was the first overseas Chapter to support Hong Kong QESOSA’s education endeavour. In 1992 our Board of Director made a three year commitment of 2 book prizes of HK$500 each to the Primary Schools. We dedicated one award each for the most deserving students from the graduating classes of the AM & PM Primary Schools. The selection criteria were based on financial need and academic merits. This was later known as the QESOSA(Ontario) Scholarship Fund. The development At our AGM in November, 1996, Tony Tsoi (66) showed a special segment of Hong Kong TVB’s “Tuesday File”. The production was triggered by the success of the QESOSA Primary Schools. This program detailed on the planning, building, teaching staff selection, and even parents orientation of the new QESOSA Secondary school. We were at cloud nine on learning that in a few short years and following the steps of QES, the QESOSA schools are already among the Ivey leagues of Hong Kong schools. The launch Great enthusiasm snow-balled, prompting the launch of a Scholarship Endowment Fund. With this fund, the Ontario Chapter will be able to consider a more long term commitment and wider scope in support of the OSA Schools. A Scholarship Sub-Committee was formed to carry out various tasks. In April 1998, we set our target at C$5,000. Reaching the goal With the approval from the Board, the Scholarship Committee declared to dedicate all activities planned for 1998 in support of the Scholarship Fund. Various activities such as silent auctions, raffle tickets and 50-50 draws were created at each function to generate interest and participation. Donations also poured in from teachers and students alike, and from across Canada and the United States as well. In 1999, the Board of Directors announced that they unanimously decided to match dollar to dollar for that year’s total donation received. By October 1999, the Board declared the Scholarship Fund a tremendous success: Target achieved! Our Commitment To enhance the school motto and to encourage students of the OSA schools, and with the new OSA Secondary school, the Board considered another scholarship for the Secondary school. In 2001, in addition to renewing the two book prizes to the QESOSA Primary Schools for an additional 5 years, our Chapter has also sponsored another HK$1,000 scholarship for the OSA Secondary School for the same term.
